Myspace

This post was inspired after reading, "Myspace free speech or pain in the a$$?, posted by Homework Hostage.

Reading that post really got me thinking. I can't believe it is legal for kids to get a myspace account. I'm not sure if they even ask you for your age when you create an account, but I know you don't need to provide any proof.
When my cousin was only 13, she had an account with pictures of herself in a bikini. I have also seen plenty of young girls (friends' younger siblings) from my home town, with seductive pictures of themselves on myspace, some of which bare most of their breasts or bra. It just freaks me out that they can post things like that, and that anyone (perverts included) can look at that.

Dear Hippiegurl,

With this modern technology of computers and complex cyberspace activities comes responsibility. When my 13 year old daughter mentioned something about myspace, right away I researched about parental controls on computers. I even purchased the software so that I am aware at all times what she does or where she's been whenever she was online. And yes, you are right, this is a frightening thought that sexual perverts can get hold of a minor's input on the internet through myspace.

Recently there was a 13-year old girl who killed herself because of myspace.com. Some irresponsible adult fed some negative thoughts into her fragile head that served as the straw that broke the camel's back. When told that the world would be better off without her, she committed suicide thinking that the other person on her myspace.com was her 16-year old boyfriend. It turned out that it was the mother of one of the girl's friends. It is very clear that Cyberspace has its blessings and its misfortunes.

I believe the current MySpace policy is you are supposed to be 16 years old but they have no way of verifying - you just put in the year you were born (or whatever year will make you 16). I agree that some of the pictures posted by young girls are way too risque. I have had several friends who say they "monitor" their girls pages and make sure they are clean. Hey parents, guess what? They have another page with a different user name and that's the one with the R rating. They keep the G one just for you!
